There was an itnerestign letter in the New Straits Times on Wednesday February 6 by Bulbir Singh. It was a short letter that subs used to pin down the page at the bottom right hand corner.
bulbir suggested that we use batik for our school uniform instead of the white shirt.
I am not quite sure what I think of it because batik can look rather messy whereas white is nice crisp and clean. However I must admit that I think it is an excellent idea because it promotes a sense of pride in the country.
There are several problems in implementing batik for schools;
1. Cost, batik is more expensive than white cotton
2. Will the patterned clothing affect children's concentration in class. Don't laugh children can get easily distracted so they may end up wasting time jsut staring at the batik pattern and daydreaming.
3. should each state have their own pattern or should we have a single look after all Kelantan and Terengganu may want theri own look and now that Kedah has Batik Merbok, they too may take exception at having to wear patterns from another state.
