Dataran Merdeka for all Malaysians

Tunku Abdul Aziz's piece on Feb 3 in the New Straits Times is one of those articles which carried an idea that everyone should have thought of but never did. Well I certainly never thought of it.

The Royal Selangor Club is a private organisation and it sits rather inappropriately in the middle of a very historic site.
The Merdeka Square deserves to be treated with more respect than as a watering hole for middle aged lawyers and elite of the Capital.

It is certainly time now for the club to vacate the premises and give it back to all Malaysians.

Should the Government wish to build a Museum of Independence then it should do so with great tact and care to the essence of Merdeka Square.

I certainly hope that they are not going to simply tear down the old clubhouse and erect some concrete monstrosity in tis place. Any plasn to build the museum must take into account the clubhouse and incorporate it as part of the new structure's fabric and identity.

Let's start a campaign to return Dataran Merdeka for All Malaysians.
